Top 5 Folly Beach Photo Spots for Family Portraits

If you’re dreaming of relaxed, joyful family portraits by the ocean, Folly Beach is one of the best spots in the Charleston area to make it happen. With its quirky charm, scenic backdrops, and funky surf-town vibes, Folly offers a beautiful mix of coastal elements perfect for documenting your family's story.

As a local, Folly-based family photographer, I’ve explored every corner of this quirky beach town—and I’m sharing my top five favorite Folly Beach photo locations to help you plan the perfect session.

1. The Folly Beach Pier (and Underneath It)

The Folly Beach Pier is one of the most iconic spots on the island—and for good reason. With its dramatic lines, open sky, and classic beach town vibe, it creates an unmistakable backdrop for your portraits. But the real magic often happens underneath the pier, where the light filters beautifully and the pillars create natural arches framed for movement and connection.

Best for: Couples looking for classic beach portraits with a touch of retro, old school date vibes
Pro tip: Visit at low tide for more sand and reflective water under the pier

Image ideas:

  • Full family enjoying ice creams along the pier

  • Kids splashing in tide pools near the water line

  • Full family framed naturally between the pillars

2. Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve

Tucked away at the northeastern tip of Folly, this location is worth the short walk. It offers a stunning view of the Morris Island Lighthouse across the inlet, with a vast, unspoiled beach that feels like a scene from a movie. You’ll witness driftwood, dunes, and even dolphins—perfect for those windswept, coastal photos that feel timeless.

Best for: Families and couples who love a bit of adventure and a good variety of backdrops
Pro tip: It’s easy to get away from the crowds and find your own beautiful sand dunes and marsh backdrops
Crowd level: A popular spot for photographers, for good reason! We won’t be alone, but it doesn’t feel crowded because everyone spreads out.

Image ideas:

  • A cozy family huddle with the lighthouse in the distance

  • Candids of barefoot kids (of all ages) climbing amongst driftwood branches

  • Portraits framed by the rolling dunes and soft grasses

3. Folly Beach County Park

Located at the southwestern tip of the island, this family-friendly park offers restrooms, parking, and beach access—making it a convenient and crowd-pleasing option. The gentle dunes, long boardwalk, and calm tidal pools create soft, scenic backdrops that are especially great for families with little explorers or pets.

4. Folly Beach Marina

For a unique take on Folly Beach family portraits, the Folly Beach Marina offers an alternative vibe to the popular sea-and-sand look. A nautical backdrop with calm water and a fully stocked bar makes this the perfect spot for laidback couples looking to stay in their bubble away from the crowds. This spot is gorgeous in the evening when the sun sets over the Folly River.

If you are looking for natural, organic family photos—without the frills—your nearest beach access point is your best shot!

Best for: Extended families with babies looking for easy, no-frills vacation photos
Pro tip: This family had lots of fun using these colorful beach balls in their photos

After many years of photographing family sessions on Folly Beach, I’m well-equipped to help you choose the best spot (or combination of spots!) to create the relaxed, natural photos of your dreams.

  • Folly Beach is never completely empty on a beautiful day—but there is always enough space. I plan sessions around light, scenery, and what places mean the most to you, so your photos feel calm, natural, and focused on you—not the background.

  • Every access point is different. Some are definitely better than others. When you’ve got a large group and √ery young babies, your closest boardwalk may be your easiest option.

  • Yes! Dogs are allowed on the beach but only during certain times and they must be on a leash. Pets are not allowed on the Pier.
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 10 am to 6 pm from May 1st to Sept. 30th.
